Getting calibrations paid: a billing playbook

How to document a calibration so the line gets paid the first time, without back-and-forth with the carrier.

Last updated: May 2026

The short answer

Calibrations get reimbursed when the file shows three things together: the OEM position that requires the operation, evidence the operation was performed correctly, and a pre/post scan bracketing the work. Focal ADAS delivers all three on every job.

Getting calibrations paid: a billing playbook

Calibrations get paid when the documentation is boring. Boring means complete, sequential, and tied to a published OEM requirement. The line that gets pushed back is almost always the line where one of those three pieces is missing.

The three pieces every calibration file needs

  1. The OEM reference. The manufacturer's published position or procedure number that calls for calibration after the repair operation that was performed.
  2. The evidence of work. The calibration report itself: which sensor, which procedure, which scan tool, and a pass result with the measured values.
  3. The before and after. A pre-scan dated before the repair began, and a post-scan dated after the calibration was completed.

Why "we always do calibration on this" does not bill

Carriers reimburse documented operations, not habits. "We always calibrate after a windshield" is a sound shop policy, but on the file it has to appear as: the OEM requires calibration after windshield replacement on this VIN, here is the procedure, here is the pass report, here are the scans bracketing the work. Same operation, completely different reimbursement outcome.

What Focal ADAS includes by default

Every Focal ADAS calibration ships with the OEM procedure reference, the scan tool pass report, pre- and post-scan PDFs, and the technician's notes, all in one file, named with the RO number. The goal is that the line gets paid the first time it is reviewed, with no follow-up calls from the desk.
