A pre-repair scan documents a vehicle's trouble codes before work begins, and a post-repair scan confirms no new faults remain after. Nearly every manufacturer requires both on collision repairs. Focal ADAS performs scans on-site and includes them with every calibration at no extra step.
When this calibration is required
Triggers below come from the manufacturer's published procedure for the build. Any one of them is enough to put the line on the file.
- At estimation, on essentially all modern collision jobs per OEM position statements
- After repair, to confirm no new faults were introduced
- Before delivery, as the documented baseline insurers expect
- Any time the OEM procedure for the VIN requires it
How Focal ADAS performs it
- 1Pre-repair scan
Full all-module scan captured before any disassembly, with every stored DTC documented in the job file.
- 2VIN-specific OEM reference
We pull the manufacturer's position statement and scan requirement for the build so the file shows the operation is required.
- 3Post-repair scan
After the repair is complete, a second all-module scan confirms no new faults were introduced during the work.
- 4Bracketed documentation
Pre and post reports are delivered together with the OEM reference and one itemized invoice, ready to pass through to the carrier.
What the shop gets
- Pre-repair scan report (all modules)
- Post-repair scan report (all modules)
- OEM calibration procedure reference (build-specific)
- Calibration completion record from the scan tool
- Setup photos of targets / drive evidence
- Itemized invoice — pass-through ready
Single-system calibrations start at $349, multi-system jobs quoted by VIN.
Frequently asked questions
Do I really need a pre-scan if the car drove in clean?+
Yes. The OEM position statements require pre-repair scanning regardless of dash lights, and carriers expect the pre/post bracket on the file. Skipping it weakens every other line on the claim.
Is the post-scan the same thing as a calibration?+
No. A clean post-scan only means no fault is stored. A calibration physically realigns a sensor. They are separate operations, separate line items, and we document them as such.
Does pre/post scanning come with insurance-ready documentation?+
Yes. Every scan job includes the pre-scan report, post-scan report, the relevant OEM position statement, and one itemized invoice formatted for CCC, Mitchell, and Audatex.
