Usually yes, if the vehicle has driver-assistance features and the collision or the repair disturbed a sensor. A crash can move the cameras, radar units, and their mounting brackets even when nothing looks broken, and a passing diagnostic scan does not confirm the sensors are still aimed correctly. Calibration is scoped from the repair operations, not from the dash lights.

Does a car need ADAS calibration after an accident?
If the vehicle carries advanced driver assistance systems, and most vehicles built in roughly the last decade do, then a collision that disturbs a camera, a radar, or the structure they mount to means those systems need to be recalibrated to the manufacturer's specification. The trigger is the repair operation. Replacing or removing a bumper, a windshield, a mirror, a quarter panel, or realigning the suspension each moves how a sensor sees the road, so the calibration follows the work that was performed rather than a warning light.
The scale of this is not small anymore. According to CCC Intelligent Solutions, calibrations appeared on just 0.9 percent of repairable appraisals in 2017, and by 2025 that share had passed 23 percent, with about a third of direct-repair claims now including one (CCC Intelligent Solutions, 2025).
Which systems a collision can disturb
A collision rarely touches just one sensor. Depending on where the vehicle was hit, the repair can disturb the forward-facing camera behind the windshield, the front radar behind the grille, the corner radars behind the rear bumper that run blind spot monitoring, the ultrasonic parking sensors, the surround-view cameras in the mirrors and bumpers, and the steering angle sensor if the suspension or steering was involved. Honda notes that its radar systems require recalibration after structural damage anywhere on the vehicle, not only damage at the sensor itself (Repairer Driven News, reporting Honda guidance).
Why a clean scan is not enough
This is the point that decides the line on the estimate. A diagnostic scan reads the fault codes a vehicle has stored about itself. A camera or radar can be physically knocked out of aim in a crash and still store no fault code, because from the sensor's point of view it is working, it is simply pointed at the wrong place. I-CAR, the collision-repair training authority, is direct about this: clearing codes is not the same as calibrating, and "in most cases the sensors/modules do not know they were replaced or that any calibration is required" (I-CAR RTS, The Differences Between Scanning and Calibration). That is why manufacturers call for calibration based on the operation performed, not the scan result.
What manufacturers require after a collision
Every major automaker has published a position on this. Toyota states that "it is necessary for repairers to perform a 'Health Check' diagnostic scan before and after every repair if a vehicle has sustained damage as a result of a collision" (Toyota CRIB No. 191, via I-CAR RTS). Ford requires "both pre-repair and post-repair diagnostic scans" on all 1996-and-newer vehicles involved in a collision beyond minor cosmetic damage, noting that "removing panels, glass, or components can introduce new fault codes requiring recalibration or initialization" (Ford Collision Repair Position Statement, 2025). The full set of manufacturer quotes is collected on the Focal ADAS OEM position statements page.
How the documentation gets the line paid
A calibration is reimbursed when the file shows three things together: the manufacturer position that requires the operation, the evidence the operation was performed correctly, and a pre-scan and post-scan bracketing the work. Focal ADAS delivers all three on every job, which is what turns a contested calibration line into a paid one. ADAS work is now a material share of the repair bill, AAA found these systems can add up to 37.6 percent to the total repair cost after a crash (AAA, 2023), so getting the documentation right is worth real money on every claim.
Frequently asked questions
The car drove in fine with no warning lights. Does it still need calibration?
Possibly, yes. A misaimed camera or radar often stores no fault code, so the absence of a warning light does not mean the sensors are still aimed correctly. Calibration is decided by whether the repair disturbed a sensor or its mounting, not by the dash.
Does a minor fender bender need calibration?
It depends on what was repaired. If the work removed or disturbed a bumper cover, a sensor, a mirror, or the glass, or realigned the suspension, then the affected system needs calibration. If no ADAS sensor or its reference was touched, it usually does not.
Who is liable if a calibration is skipped and the system fails later?
A calibration documented to the manufacturer standard moves that risk to the calibration provider. That is one reason shops treat calibration as a documented, required operation rather than an optional step.
