Yes. When a Tesla camera or windshield is replaced, the camera calibration data has to be cleared and the cameras recalibrated. Tesla does this differently from other makes: instead of a target board in the shop, the calibration completes dynamically while the car is driven, and Autopilot features stay limited until it finishes.
How Tesla calibration is different
Most manufacturers publish a position statement and use a static, target-based calibration in the shop. Tesla does neither. It does not publish an OEM position statement in the usual sense, and its camera calibration is dynamic only, there is no target board. Tesla's own documentation says calibration is needed "before some features such as Lane Departure Avoidance and Automatic Emergency Braking can be used for the first time or after some types of service repairs," and is triggered when "a camera has shifted from its calibrated position (for example, the camera or windshield was replaced)" (Tesla, Calibrating Cameras).
What Tesla's service manual requires
Tesla's requirements live directly in its service manual rather than a position statement. The manual states that "any time an external camera's position has been altered (i.e., camera reinstallation or replacement), camera calibration data must be cleared," after which the vehicle "must be manually driven for up to 100 miles (160 km)," and "until calibration is complete, Autopilot functionality will be limited" (Tesla Model Y Service Manual). On the documentation side, I-CAR notes that while "Tesla does not have a position statement that the repair facility needs to perform a pre- and post-repair scan," scanning "is part of the OEM repair procedures" and the scan-tool steps are built into the manual (I-CAR RTS).
Does a Tesla even have radar to calibrate?
Sometimes not. Many newer Model 3 and Model Y vehicles use a camera-only system Tesla calls Tesla Vision, with no front radar at all, so on those cars there is no radar to calibrate and the calibration work is entirely camera-based. Whether a specific Tesla has radar depends on the model and build, which is confirmed against the VIN before the work is scoped. This is one reason a Tesla job should never be quoted from a generic template.
What this means for a shop
Two practical points follow. First, because the calibration is a drive, it takes real distance and time to complete, and the vehicle should not be delivered as finished until it has, since Autopilot stays degraded until then. Second, the value on a Tesla is in doing the clear-and-recalibrate correctly with the right tooling and documenting it, the scan, the procedure reference, and confirmation the calibration completed, not in a target setup.
