Does a windshield replacement need an ADAS calibration?

A practical guide for estimators on the most commonly missed line item in glass work.

Last updated: May 2026

The short answer

Almost always, yes. On most vehicles built in roughly the last decade, the forward-facing camera is mounted to the windshield, and replacing the glass means that camera must be recalibrated.

Does a windshield replacement need an ADAS calibration?

A modern windshield is no longer just glass. On most newer vehicles it is the mounting platform for the camera that runs lane keeping, automatic emergency braking and traffic sign recognition. Replace the glass, and that camera moves.

Why the windshield specifically matters

Three things change during a windshield replacement, and each one affects the camera:

  • The camera is removed from the old glass and remounted to the new one
  • The replacement glass has slightly different optical properties and thickness
  • The camera bracket can shift within manufacturing tolerance

Any one of these is enough to throw the camera off its reference. Together, they make recalibration close to universal on camera-equipped vehicles.

What happens if it is skipped

A camera that is even slightly out of alignment still produces an image. It just produces the wrong one. The vehicle may read a lane line as inches from where it actually is, or judge a vehicle ahead as closer or farther than reality. Lane keeping and emergency braking then act on bad information.

This is the core reason calibration is not optional: the system does not fail loudly. It fails quietly, and only in the moment it is needed.

How to handle it on the estimate

If a windshield is being replaced on a vehicle with a forward camera, the calibration belongs on the estimate as a documented, required operation. It is not a discretionary add-on. Supported with a pre-scan, a post-scan and the manufacturer reference, it bills as cleanly as any other necessary repair step.
